To take an exam and to pass an exam

Many years ago I met up with friends and told them that I had passed an exam that same morning. Once they started congratulating me I realised something had been lost in translation. What I really meant was that I had taken the exam not actually passed it. There is confidence and over confidence right?? Easy mistake to make. See below:)
